Fund Census docs

Fund Census connects investment advisers, their private funds, owners, executives and service providers from public SEC filings: Form ADV, Form D, Form 13F, Form N-CEN and Schedules 13D/13G. The MCP server and the JSON API are read-only and return the same records.

MCP tools

profile_summary

Compact profile. Compiled identity, core filed facts and exact retained section counts without loading relationships. Missing sections remain not_retained. Same summary contract as the website.

profile_section

Profile relationship page. One bounded requested profile section. Provider clients require role; client_evidence also requires fund. Retained empty, unavailable and not_retained are distinct.

source_compare

Compare native source observations. Side-by-side retained typed observations for two to four explicit source record IDs. Units, currency, periods and missing reasons remain separate. This does not establish identity matches or normalize unlike financial measures.

sources

Source coverage. Discover retained official source families and their exact scope, stage counts and limitations. Zero retained records is not complete population coverage.

source_records

Search source records. Bounded standalone government records with original filing identity. Search does not establish an adviser or fund link. Only accepted source link decisions establish qualified relationships.

source_record

Source record detail. Exact document, retained observation versions, typed values, missing reasons and qualified link decisions. Decimal and integer values remain exact strings.

source_evidence

Source record evidence. Original URL and digest, native locator, observation versions, link decisions and derived facts with exact observation witnesses. Source-source matches are not automatic identity merges.

change_evidence

Compare filing evidence. Before and after Form ADV filing IDs, dates, reported values, original archive links and normalized UTF-8 CSV hashes for fund additions, removals and provider changes. Hashes identify the pipeline's normalized CSV cache, not original archive bytes. Asset-value changes may lack compared source filings. Empty rows mean not reported in that filing, not a confirmed fund closure.

registered_operations

Registered fund operating facts. Read annual Form N-CEN operating facts for a manager CRD or registered series ID: brokerage commissions, actual securities lending, credit facilities and their use, and expense limitations. Links require corroborated filed adviser identity and an ADV registered-fund claim. Targeted coverage, report periods, filing sources, total results and allowance truncation are explicit. Missing reports and null answers are unknown; annual activity is not current risk. Do not sum shared credit capacity or attribute registered-series assets to private funds.

find_advisers

Find advisers by their business. Find active advisers by reported client categories, services, compensation methods or explicit SMA custodian, wrap sponsor and registered fund identifiers. Conditions combine with AND. Results cite the latest Form ADV filing. Categories are filed descriptions, not inferred investor suitability.

adviser_business

Advisory business. Filed client categories and their regulatory assets, advisory services, compensation methods, separately managed account custodians, wrap programs and corroborated sponsor links, and registered investment company identifiers. Exact filing dates and IDs are retained. Missing answers are unknown; compensation methods are not fee rates. Custodian coverage is limited to the Form ADV 10% threshold, and registered fund identifiers do not establish current holdings.

adviser_brochures

Filed brochure sections and fee terms. Section page references and scoped fee excerpts from cached official IAPD brochures, with account wrapper, strategy when explicit, exact passage, physical page, document version and filing date. Excerpts retain negotiability qualifications and are not negotiated quotes. Coverage is explicit: absent, failed, unavailable or unparsed documents do not imply that a firm has no brochure or policy.

holdings

Reported securities positions. Search all eligible retained Form 13F positions by adviser CRD or filed CUSIP, not only the profile's top ten. Default is the newest retained report quarter across the dataset. Positions retain their filing source. Reported investment discretion is not beneficial ownership; filings may omit confidential positions and do not prove current holdings.

holdings_overlap

Shared reported securities. Positions shared by all two to four selected advisers in the same report quarter. Share and principal positions, puts and calls remain separate. Includes sources and missing-report coverage; an empty result with a missing report is not evidence of no overlap.

search

Search Fund Census. Use this first to turn a name into an id. Finds advisers, private funds, registered fund series, people and service providers by name, best match then largest first. Words match by prefix and must all appear. Supports "exact phrase", -exclude, a OR b, and kind:adviser|fund|registered|person|provider.

get_entity

Get profile. Full profile of one adviser (CRD number), private fund (805- fund ID), person or provider, using an id from search. Adviser profiles include connections: related firms with reported financial affiliations, shared owners, funds or providers. other_names contains current Schedule D 1.B business names. affiliations contains all filed Schedule D 7.A financial affiliates, including unlinked names; entity_id is populated only for an exact adviser CRD corroborated by current names and any supplied SEC number. Categories and control, common_control, custodian, shared_people and shared_location answers retain the filing values; null means unknown, not No. Each affiliate has a Form ADV source with its section, filing ID, date and latest-PDF URL. Eligible advisers include holdings_13f: the latest two reported quarters of Form 13F summary value, holdings count and top ten reported positions, matched only by exact CIK. Values are in dollars, with absolute dollar and share/principal changes against the immediately previous quarter where comparable data exists. SH and PRN units and Put/Call are kept as filed. Reported 13F value covers selected securities, not total assets under management; each report includes its quarter, accession and EDGAR source URL. Eligible advisers include stakes_13dg: positions of 5% or more from the reporting person's latest identified filing for each issuer in available structured Schedule 13D/13G filings since December 18, 2024, linked only through XML reportingPersonCIK on 13D or reportingCik on 13G matching the adviser CIK exactly. Filing-header CIKs and names never create these links. Each position includes issuer, CUSIP, percent of class, shares, schedule, event date, filed date and EDGAR source URL. These are reported positions as of their dates, not confirmation of current ownership. Some joint filings may be missing. The JSON API returns every retained position; MCP lists over 25 entries end with a remaining-count marker. Adviser and fund profiles include due-diligence flags (audit opinion, related-person administrator or custodian, auditor independence and PCAOB inspection, investor statement delivery), the chief compliance officer, the latest filing type and 1-year growth in percent. Eligible fund profiles include fundraising: Form D and D/A history joined only by the exact Form ADV file number, excluding historical identifier conflicts and master-feeder structures, with amounts, investors, offering terms, compensation recipients, related persons and EDGAR source URLs. Amount sold is cumulative within each file number. Compensation recipients remain unlinked text because filed CRDs failed the precision review; related persons remain unlinked text. Adviser profiles list firm_roles (chief compliance officer, outsourced compliance firm, regulatory contact and the filing's signatory); fund profiles list roles (general partners, managers and directors named in Schedule D 7.B.(1) question 3, as filed). A role has an owner_id (the matching person or company owner) only when the same name is on that adviser's own Schedule A or B; kind tells a person from a company; names are never matched across firms, and listed_on counts active funds that list the exact same name, not one confirmed person. Every role carries its source: form section, filing id, filing date and the firm's current Form ADV PDF.

rankings

Rankings. League tables: largest and fastest-growing managers and funds by fund type, and service providers by role (legal entity or parent group).

changes

Recent filing changes. What changed between each firm's Form ADV filing and its previous one, plus linked fund Form D and D/A filings, newest first and most significant first within a day. Form D events report cumulative amount sold in after and the previous filing's amount for the same file number in before; before is null for the first available filing. detail carries its accession number. Dates are filing dates. Tier 1 is high significance (auditor or administrator switch, registration change, AUM drop of 25%+, control owner change, large fund gone), tier 2 medium, tier 3 routine. Kinds: new_adviser, registration, aum, gav, fund_launched, fund_added, fund_removed, provider_switched, provider_added, provider_removed, owner_added, owner_removed, form_d.

compare

Compare. Side-by-side rows for 2 to 4 advisers or funds, using ids from search.

neighbours

Graph neighbours. One-hop graph around any entity, as nodes and edges with ids of the form type:id. An adviser shows its connected firms (each peer edge names up to three shared owners, co-advised funds, umbrella registrations or providers in via), largest funds, current owners and executives, and providers; a person shows their firms and roles; a fund shows its advisers, providers, master and feeders; a provider shows its largest client advisers. Truncated groups are listed in more with true totals.

path

How is A connected to B?. Shortest chain linking two entities, given as type:id (for example advisers:142979 and people:4664163). People, funds and providers are first mapped to their advisers; firms are then linked through shared owners, co-advised funds, umbrella registrations or shared providers, and each hop names those links in via. Searches up to 3 firm-to-firm hops from each side and says so when nothing is found.

show_graph

Show graph. Show only an interactive connection graph inline, without the full app or an entity profile. Use this when the user asks to see a graph, network or connections. Reuse the known entity id; no profile retrieval is needed just to display its graph.

show

Show view. Show a compact, collapsible Fund Census view inline when the user asks for an interactive view. For a graph use show_graph, or pass /graph?n=advisers:106847&x=advisers:106847; never substitute an adviser profile for a graph request. For a connection path use /graph?p=advisers:106847,providers:northern-trust. Other paths include /advisers/{crd}, /funds/{805-id}, /people/{id}, /providers/{id}, /screener/funds?type=vc&gav=1B.., /rankings/custodian?level=group, /changes and /compare?type=advisers&ids=a,b. Reuse ids already known. The returned path is rendered by the host; do not claim rendering succeeded based on a tool response alone.

JSON API

Every endpoint is a GET under https://fundcensus.com/api and returns JSON shaped as {data, next, meta}. Pass next back as cursor for the next page. The OpenAPI description is at https://fundcensus.com/openapi.json.

Without credentials, requests are limited per IP and lists stop at the first 500 rows. With an API key from your account page, sent as Authorization: Bearer <key>, requests count toward your daily allowance.
